It's getting close to the time of year when you need to start your herb garden. Now if you prefer to buy herb plants from a nursery, you still have some time; but if you are going to start some herbs from seeds, it is time to get started.
I like starting several herbs from seeds because it is very easy to do but, more importantly, it's a lot cheaper to start a garden from seed, and we are all cutting expenses right now.
Some herbs that do very well from seeds are those in the mint family. This includes not only mint varieties but also basil, oregano, marjoram and thyme. These common Italian herbs grow very well from seed and I have never had any die after transplanting them outside into my garden.
The great thing about Italian herbs is that they not only add wonderful flavor to your Italian recipes, but are incredibly easy to grow. Anything in the mint family grows well in containers too, for those will apartments or small yards. One advantage of growing them in containers is that it prevents the spreading that is so common with mint family herbs.
If you have never grown your own herbs for cooking, you will be surprised at how easy they are to grow. I have helped many friends who were convinced they couldn't grow anything, start and herb garden and watched in delight as they thrived. Anyone can grow and herb garden, and you will save so much money not buying fresh herbs from the grocery store. If you have not started cooking with fresh herbs yet, get started now! Your family and friends will be amazed at your culinary talents.
